This is a valuable unpublished ph.D thesis which analyzes in great detail the development of Black sea grain trade in the 19th century based on official statistical series of the Russian Empire. The port cities, their foundation and evolution over time forms the basis of the analysis of the rise of the Black sea region in the international grain trade and the role of this process to the economic development. Στον τόμο απεικονίζεται το πολιτικό και κοινωνικό περιβάλλον στο οποίο αναδύθηκε και έδρασε η οικογένεια των Μαυρογένη, ακολουθώντας τον ιδιαίτερο τρόπο γραφής των Ευρωπαίων περιηγητών του βαλκανικού χώρου. Το ενδιαφέρον του συγγραφέα εστιάζεται κυρίως στον πρίγκιπα Νικόλαο Μαυρογένη και στην πολυτάραχη ζωή του, στις σχέσεις του με το Φανάρι, στην εντυπωσιακή ανάδειξή του στο θρόνο της Μολδοβλαχίας, στο σημαντικό του έργο για την οργάνωση των ηγεμονιών, στις στρατιωτικές τους ικανότητες, στην πολιτική του οξυδέρκεια και, τέλος, στην κατακόρυφη πτώση και τον τραγικό θάνατό του. The present volume, "The House of Mavrogeni", of Theodor Blanchar, hellenist, was published in 1896, aiming to shed light to the historical course and many aspects of the important Greek family from the Fanar of Istanbul, the Mavrogeni family. The book reveals important aspects of the political and social background of that historical period.
