Studies of the nineteenth-century Ottoman and Russian Empires as well as of the numerous nation-states that came into existence around the Black Sea have mostly been pursued separately. This article attempts to offer an alternative framework of analysis for the study of the Black Sea world during the nineteenth century. It starts off from Femand Braudel's approach to the sixteenth-century Mediterranean world in order to discuss whether and to what extent the Black Sea region could also be conceived as a world. Not only structural similarities but also historically-specific circumstances are emphasized for supporting the parallel drawn between the sixteenth-century Mediterranean and the nineteenth-century Black Sea. A number of further intellectual questions are raised in order to demonstrate that a holistic perspective has much to offer for re-directing academic research into more promising problem areas.

Το βιβλίο αναφέρεται στην ιστορία, τις δραστηριότητες και το εμπόριο των Ελλήνων στις πόλεις-λιμάνια της Αζοφικής θάλασσας το 18ο και αρχές του 19ου αιώνα.

Στα σύνορα Ρωσίας και Ουκρανίας σήμερα, οι πόλεις-λιμάνια της Αζοφικής στη διάρκεια της περιόδου 1774-1917 είχαν αλματώδη οικονομική και κοινωνική ανάπτυξη. Η δημιουργία πόλεων στις έρημες στέπες, αποτέλεσμα της αποικιοποίησης της περιοχής από την αυτοκρατορική Ρωσία, προσέλκυσαν πληθυσμούς από το Ιόνιο και το Αιγαίο, που εγκαταστάθηκαν εκεί και ανέλαβαν το εξωτερικό εμπόριο και τη ναυτιλία της περιοχής. Η αλυσίδα των πόλεων, το Ταγανρόγ, το "βασίλειο των Ελλήνων" και γενέθλια πόλη του Τσέχωφ, το Ροστόβ πάνω στον "ήρεμο Ντον", στη χώρα των Κοζάκων, η Μαριούπολη, η πόλη των Ελλήνων από την Κριμαία και το Μπερντιάνσκ, αποτέλεσαν εύρωστες παροικίες Κεφαλλήνων, Ιθακήσιων, Μυκονιατών, Σαντορινιών, παριανών και Χιωτών. Ακόμη και ο Γεώργιος Σουρής, στα 17 του χρόνια, τον Ιούλιο του 1870, μετέβη στην Αζοφική για να μαθητεύσει κοντά σε ένα θείο του έμπορο, Χιώτη: "Πώς σ' ενθυμούμαι, ω Αζόφ και Τάναϊ, ακόμη! / κάθε ημέρα κίνησις και νέο πανηγύρι· / από σιτάρι κι' άχυρο εστρώνοντο οι δρόμοι, / και έτρεχαν οι έμποροι, και έτρεχαν κι' οι χοίροι", γράφει για το Ταγανρόγ.
Οι μελέτες του παρόντος τόμου, προϊόντα πολύχρονης έρευνας βασισμένης σε πρωτογενές αχρησιμοποίητο υλικό των ρωσικών και των ουκρανικών αρχείων, είναι αποτέλεσμα μιας πρωτοποριακής συνεργασίας Ρώσων, Ουκρανών και Ελλήνων ιστορικών, και αναδεικνύουν την πολύτιμη συνεισφορά των Ελλήνων στην ευμάρεια των πόλεων και στη σύνδεση της περιοχής με τη Δυτική Ευρώπη και το διεθνές εμπόριο./  The book refers to the history of the economic and social activities and commerce of the Greeks in the city-ports of the Azov Sea in the 18th and early 19th centuries. 

Between the borders of Ukraine and Russia today, the port cities of the Azov sea during the period 1774 and 1917 experienced and impressive economic and social growth. The establishment of the port cities in the empty steppes, a result of the colonization scheme of the Russian Empire, attracted populations from the Ionian and Aegean seas, who were situated and took over the international trade and shipping of the region. The net of port cities, Taganrog, the "Greeks' kingdom" and birth town of Chekhov, Roston on the silent Don, in the land of the Cossacks, Mariupol, the city of the Greeks from Berdyansk and Crimea, developed as rich diaspora communities of Greeks coming from Cephalonia, Ithaca, Mykonos, Santorini, Psara and Chios. 

The present volume is the product of a many years research on newly found archival material from the Russian and Ukrainian archives between Greek, Russian and Ukranian historians and reveal the role played by the Greeks in the development of those port cities and the connection of the region to Western Europe and international trade.  

В монографии изложено авторское видение и решение поставленной научной проблемы – урбанизации на территории Южной Украины второй половины ХІХ – начала ХХ в. Урбанизация рассматривается как процесс городского развития, рост роли городов и распространения городского образа жизни. Опубликован эмпирический материал, теоретические интерпретации, обобщения и положения могут быть полезными всем тем, кто интересуется исторической урбанистикой, прошлым Российской империи, Украины и южного региона.

Данная книга о истории города Таганрога за период с 1698 по 1898
